There are several types of filters, but here are the 3 types we most commonly see in the Kansas City market.

Electronic Air Filters.

Electronic filters are the most complex and expensive filters, and give you the cleanest air. They are powered from your home’s electrical system, and have a power button by the access door. We recommend that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for care and maintenance. Just find the make and model number on the cover panel and try searching online.

4″ Thick Filters from FilterBuy

High Efficiency Filters

High efficiency filters are the second most common that we find. They may be pocket-type, (A metal frame with filter material hanging down creating “pockets.”) or they could be a thicker version of the standard rectangle filter. These 4-5″ thick filters provide a higher level of indoor air quality than the standard 1″ disposable filters. The filter material is able to have much larger pleats resulting in more surface area. In turn, these filters can catch smaller particles without impeding air flow. These filters should be changed about every 6 months.

Standard 1″ Thick Filters from FilterBuy

Standard Disposable Filters

Standard 1″ thick air filters are the most common type that we see. These are the least expensive filters, and require the most maintenance. Some of these 1″ filters can filter out smaller particles, and produce cleaner air. However, this can restrict air-flow and damage you heating and cooling system is not replaced extremely frequently. We recommend buying filters with a rating of MERV 6, and changing them monthly. Remember, a higher MERV rating will filter smaller particles, produce cleaner air, and require more frequent changes.
